Mineral Europa: World’s First Ammonia-Powered Dry Bulker Sails | Mariner News
The world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk vessel, the 210,000 dwt Mineral Europa, has embarked on its maiden voyage to Australia, marking a significant milestone in the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts.
Announced by CMB.TECH NV, the 2026-built vessel represents what the company terms the “fifth propulsion revolution,” enabling ships to sail without CO2 emissions for the first time in over 200 years.
This is not a standalone prototype, but the vanguard of an ambitious fleet expansion. CMB.TECH plans to deliver a total of twenty-one ammonia-powered vessels by 2029. This new generation includes eighteen dry bulkers, one container ship, and two chemical tankers, with most expected to join the fleet within the next nine months.
The rapid deployment schedule, particularly for the dry bulk sector, indicates a shift from theoretical ammonia feasibility to practical operational readiness. This commitment to a diverse, scaled fleet signals strong confidence in ammonia as a viable marine fuel and suggests a looming demand for bunkering infrastructure that will require swift adaptation from ports and suppliers.
CMB.TECH stated the launch proves that “decarbonising shipping is no longer a distant ambition. It is happening today,” underscoring the immediate transition from pilot projects to commercial fleet operations.
