ClassNK Endorses Freshness Keeping Catalyst for Vessels | Mariner News
ClassNK has granted its Innovation Endorsement for Products & Solutions to a ‘Freshness Keeping Catalyst’ developed by Nikki-Universal Co., Ltd., and distributed by Sojitz Machinery Corporation. This endorsement confirms the product’s efficacy in removing ethylene gas emitted by fruits and vegetables, thereby enhancing food preservation in refrigerated storerooms on board vessels.
The catalyst’s confirmed functionality directly addresses the critical maritime challenges of securing adequate fresh food supplies for crew members and significantly reducing food loss at sea.
Critically, ClassNK-registered vessels equipped with this product are now eligible for the ‘ELW’ notation (FP) – Freshness Preservation. This notation provides shipowners with a certified means to demonstrate their commitment to improving onboard living conditions, a key factor in crew welfare and retention.
The availability of the ‘ELW’ (FP) notation could serve as a competitive differentiator in the market, signaling advanced crew facilities and potentially influencing vessel employment and chartering decisions for companies prioritizing superior crew environments and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) commitments. Beyond direct operational benefits, the reduction of food loss also contributes to broader sustainability objectives within the shipping industry.
ClassNK’s Innovation Endorsement program aims to support the deployment and development of innovative technologies by providing third-party certification for equipment and software with innovative functions, thereby facilitating their adoption across the maritime sector.
