Guangzhou Port has completed its inaugural ship-to-ship (STS) green methanol bunkering operation for an international bulk carrier, signaling an expansion of China’s clean fuel infrastructure to a new vessel segment.

This milestone occurred at the Lantau Island anchorage, where the bunker vessel Daqing 268, operated by China Shipping & Sinopec Suppliers, delivered 1,021 metric tons of ISCC EU-certified green methanol.

The recipient, NYK’s methanol dual-fuel Ultramax bulk carrier Green Future, was delivered to the Japanese shipping firm last year. This operation distinguishes itself as the first green methanol STS bunkering for an international bulk carrier at a domestic Chinese port. Previously, green methanol bunkering activities in China predominantly served container and ro-ro vessels.

The move beyond container and ro-ro sectors to include an international bulk carrier suggests China’s major ports are broadening their service capabilities to cater to the diverse needs of the global fleet engaged in various trade lanes. This development could accelerate the adoption of methanol dual-fuel technology within the international bulk sector, providing critical bunkering support in a significant global shipping hub. It also highlights China’s increasing role in enabling the decarbonization pathways for a wider array of vessel types beyond its domestic or regionally focused routes.
