Taiwan Rescues Crew from Tug After Bulker Grounds | Mariner News
A complex maritime incident unfolded near Taiwan’s Hualien port, requiring a dramatic Taiwan rescue operation by the Air Service Corps. Initially, a bulker, the CSE Prosperity Express, ran aground after losing power in severe monsoon winds while awaiting a pilot. This prompted the dispatch of a tug to assist the distressed vessel.
Compounding Marine Challenges
The 28,350 dwt bulker, on its approach from Thailand, became buffeted by strong northeasterly monsoon winds, leading to a power failure and subsequent grounding on January 1. The Hualien Port Authority swiftly sent the tug Taiwangang 13205 to aid the bulker. However, the rescue attempt quickly spiraled into a compounded problem when the tug became entangled in the bulker’s lines and was also driven ashore, becoming disabled.
Aerial Crew Extraction Mission
With the tug’s crew of five, including an injured member requiring hospitalization, in peril due to adverse weather and high surf, conventional sea rescue efforts proved impossible. The Coast Guard and local services were unable to reach the stranded tug. Consequently, Taiwan’s Air Service Corps deployed a helicopter, executing a critical crew airlift. The helicopter successfully extracted the crew, bringing a swift resolution to the immediate danger. This highlights the severe conditions mariners often face and the crucial role of air rescue in such emergencies.
