Ravenna CCS Secures European Innovation Fund Backing
The Ravenna CCS Phase 2 project has been selected for funding under the 2025 European Innovation Fund, marking a critical step in the development of a large-scale, multimodal CO2 transport and storage infrastructure in Italy. Developed by Eni and Snam, the project was chosen in the Large Scale category for its strategic role in accelerating industrial decarbonisation and strengthening European low-emission technology value chains.
Strategic Regional Infrastructure
With a total storage capacity of approximately 500 million tonnes, the Ravenna hub is positioned as the primary storage site for Mediterranean Europe. The project now accounts for over 70% of announced storage capacity in the region, establishing the Adriatic site as the cornerstone of the bloc’s industrial carbon sequestration network.
Operational and Commercial Implications
The funding validation moves the Ravenna project beyond pilot-phase feasibility toward industrial-scale deployment. For maritime logistics and energy operators, the formal recognition of this hub creates a high-certainty destination for captured emissions, effectively de-risking long-term investment in specialized CO2 carrier fleets.
By securing EU backing for Phase 2, the project establishes a regulatory and technical benchmark that will likely dictate the standards for future multimodal carbon-capture infrastructure in the Mediterranean. As transport infrastructure matures, shipowners and charterers can expect increased project-based demand for vessels capable of handling liquefied CO2, shifting the focus from general-purpose gas carriage to specialized carbon-dedicated transport routes.
