Viking Line Expands Wärtsilä Service Agreement for Third Vessel | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

Viking Line has significantly expanded its long-standing partnership with Wärtsilä, signing a five-year service agreement for the passenger ferry Viking XPRS. This move makes Viking XPRS the third vessel in the Finnish operator’s fleet to receive Wärtsilä’s tailored lifecycle support services, reinforcing a strategic focus on operational continuity and efficiency.

The agreement is specifically designed to meet the demanding operational requirements of the Viking XPRS, which serves the busy Helsinki-Tallinn route. It encompasses maintenance planning, scheduled spare parts provisioning, customized maintenance support, and the oversight of a dedicated Contract Manager, all aimed at bolstering reliability, optimizing operational efficiency, and enhancing maintenance cost predictability.

Mathias Sundberg, Technical Manager for Viking Line, highlighted the efficacy of their existing Wärtsilä service agreements on the Viking Grace and Viking Glory. He noted that extending this proactive and structured maintenance approach to Viking XPRS aligns with the company’s broader objectives for fleet reliability, operational efficiency, environmental performance, and predictable lifecycle costs.

This expansion signals Viking Line’s commitment to standardizing its maintenance approach for critical machinery across a significant portion of its passenger fleet. By entrusting engine lifecycle support to the original equipment manufacturer, the operator aims to streamline technical management, leverage specialized expertise, and ensure consistent vessel performance, crucial for high-frequency ferry operations.

The strategic reliance on comprehensive service agreements underscores a preference for long-term partnerships that minimize unscheduled downtime and secure operational uptime in a competitive market segment. Such proactive maintenance directly contributes to maintaining service schedules and enhancing passenger experience on vital routes.

Wärtsilä booked the order in Q2 2026, solidifying its role as a key technical partner in Viking Line’s fleet management strategy.
