Shanghai Sets 5.1M TEU Record in September | Mariner News

Trust Score: 35

Shanghai, the world’s busiest container port, achieved a new monthly record in September, handling a staggering 5.135 million TEU. This unprecedented throughput marks a rapid and robust recovery from significant operational disruptions caused by three powerful typhoons starting in July, which had led to growing backlogs and vessel congestion.

The September figures represent a 6.2 percent increase over the same month in 2025, with the port processing an average of 171,000 TEU daily. One facility, the Mingdong Terminal, further underscored the port’s exceptional performance by exceeding 30,056 TEUs within a single 24-hour period, setting its own operational record.

This rapid rebound and record-setting performance, despite the recent weather-related suspensions and a surge in international export demand, highlights the critical role of sophisticated port management and technological integration. The Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) credits a concerted effort involving optimized berthing and loading/unloading operations, alongside close coordination with shipping companies to merge shipments where possible. This suggests a highly integrated logistics approach extending beyond basic port operations.

The emphasis on high automation and production organization indicates that these technological investments are crucial not only for routine efficiency but also for resilience against external shocks and the ability to quickly scale up operations to clear backlogs. Such capabilities provide a significant competitive advantage in maintaining supply chain fluidity amidst global trade volatility.

The momentum from September’s record appears to have carried into October, signaling sustained high volumes. The broader context of strong international demand is further evidenced by reports from the Port of Los Angeles, which also recorded its best single month in September at just over 1 million TEU.
