A.P. Moller Capital Acquires Portek International | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

A.P. Moller Capital has significantly expanded its global port operating footprint by agreeing to acquire 100% of Portek International Pte. Ltd. from Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The transaction, executed through A.P. Moller Capital’s Emerging Markets Infrastructure Fund II, integrates a diversified portfolio of cargo terminals into the investment firm’s holdings.

Portek International, a Singapore-based operator founded in 1988, manages seven multipurpose port terminals across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Its geographic reach includes interests in Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta, and Vietnam, serving a range of local and international trade flows.

The acquisition adds an established player handling approximately seven million tonnes of bulk cargo, 700,000 containers, and 90,000 vehicles annually. Beyond terminal operations, Portek also provides port engineering and operations and maintenance (O&M) services, primarily from its hubs in Singapore and Indonesia, employing around 1,400 people.

Semih Gökmen, Partner at A.P. Moller Capital, highlighted Portek as a “strong fit” for their investment strategy and “active owner philosophy.” This approach suggests A.P. Moller Capital is not merely a financial investor but intends to actively shape the operational and strategic direction of its new port assets.

The integration of Portek’s existing engineering and O&M capabilities is a notable aspect of this acquisition. This internal expertise could enable A.P. Moller Capital to pursue greater operational efficiencies and potentially expand service offerings across its portfolio, reducing reliance on third-party providers. The focus on multipurpose terminals and varied cargo types also offers resilience and flexibility in navigating diverse trade demands, particularly in emerging markets where integrated logistics solutions are increasingly valued.
