HMM Orders 12 Container Vessels in $1.6bn Deal | Mariner News
HMM has committed USD 1.6 billion for the acquisition of 12 new container vessels, a significant investment aimed at expanding and modernizing its fleet. The South Korean flag carrier’s order comprises eight 13,000 TEU container ships and four feeder vessels.
This strategic fleet enhancement suggests a reinforcement of HMM’s operational model, particularly with the addition of feeder tonnage. The introduction of new feeder vessels aligns with HMM’s stated intent to expand its hub-and-spoke network, enabling more efficient cargo distribution from major transhipment points.
The eight 13,000 TEU vessels will likely bolster capacity on core long-haul trades, feeding cargo into the expanding regional network enabled by the feeder vessels.
The investment comes despite HMM reporting a 37% plummet in its half-year net result, indicating a long-term strategic focus on fleet development and network optimization amidst fluctuating market conditions.
