Norsepower Fits Six Rotor Sails on Dual-Fuel Methanol RoRo | Mariner News
Norsepower has completed the installation of six rotor sails on the RoRo vessel Spirit of Toulouse, operated by LD Armateurs. The vessel, chartered by Airbus, is now the world’s largest RoRo ship fitted with a wind propulsion system, marking a significant stride in hybrid decarbonization strategies for specialized cargo streams.
The 35-meter high sails were installed by Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group at a coastal outfitting site in Shanghai. This integration positions the Spirit of Toulouse, the first of three sister ships chartered to Airbus for transporting large aircraft components between Europe and North America, as a key testbed for advanced vessel efficiency.
Critically, the rotor sails are designed to operate in conjunction with the vessel’s two methanol dual-fuel main engines. This multi-technology approach, combining wind propulsion with alternative fuels, underscores a growing industry trend where charterers, such as Airbus, drive the adoption of complex, layered solutions to meet stringent emissions targets for their supply chains. The commitment from major cargo owners like Airbus to vessels featuring such advanced hybrid systems could accelerate similar decarbonization efforts across other high-value and time-sensitive logistics segments.
The Spirit of Toulouse will undergo testing during sea trials, with further optimization planned for its maiden voyage from China to France. Performance data from these operations will be crucial in validating the effectiveness and economic benefits of large-scale wind-assisted, dual-fuel RoRo vessels in real-world conditions.
