IINO Lines Deploys Ice-Class LPG Dual-Fuel VLGC for Borouge | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

IINO Lines has deployed the LPG dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) Lumi Aurora under a long-term charter with Borouge International, specifically designed to navigate challenging Arctic-influenced waters for feedstock deliveries to Finland.

The Lumi Aurora stands out as the world’s first VLGC to achieve Ice Class IB standards, a critical capability for its intended route. The vessel will transport LPG from North America to Borouge International’s petrochemical plant in Porvoo, Finland, a region where sea ice significantly complicates winter navigation. This ice-class designation enables the vessel to operate throughout the year with icebreaker assistance, ensuring consistent feedstock deliveries crucial for maintaining the plant’s operations.

The deployment underscores a strategic move by industrial players like Borouge to secure dedicated, resilient, and specialized logistics for their supply chains, particularly in operationally demanding environments. This approach mitigates seasonal disruptions and enhances supply reliability, potentially influencing future newbuild specifications for similar critical trade routes. The Lumi Aurora is the second VLGC chartered by Borouge International, following the Oceanus Aurora, which has served its facilities in Finland and Sweden since 2023.

While LPG remains a niche marine fuel, primarily concentrated within the gas carrier segment, its adoption on the Lumi Aurora aligns with decarbonization efforts. IINO Lines secured a transitional loan from Mizuho Bank to finance the vessel’s acquisition, reflecting ongoing investment in advanced tonnage.
