Pavimar Links to Hengli Kamsarmax Newbuilds
Pavimar has moved to bolster its core fleet segment by placing an order for four Kamsarmax bulk carriers with China’s Hengli Heavy Industries. Industry sources indicate the contract is priced between $37.5 million and $38.5 million per vessel, with a delivery schedule running through 2029.
Fleet Expansion Strategy
This order represents a strategic consolidation of Pavimar’s existing operating model. With a current fleet of 23 bulk carriers spanning from Handysize to Capesize, the company has historically utilized Panamax and Kamsarmax tonnage as its operational backbone. Securing modern, high-spec Kamsarmax assets at this price point suggests a focus on maintaining fleet relevance in the medium-term, particularly as environmental regulations tighten and the fleet ages.
Yard Positioning
The selection of Hengli Heavy Industries for this series underscores the shipyard’s aggressive pursuit of market share in the mainstream dry bulk sector. For Pavimar, locking in delivery slots out to 2029 highlights a preference for long-lead time fleet renewal, effectively hedging against shipyard capacity constraints and rising newbuild prices that have persisted throughout the current cycle.
The investment suggests an expectation of sustained demand for Kamsarmax-sized tonnage, which remains the workhorse for grain and coal trades globally. By committing to these specific vessels, Pavimar is ensuring it has the modern, fuel-efficient capacity required to satisfy charterer requirements as older, less efficient units face increasing pressure from carbon intensity regulations.
