MSC Orders 20 More Megaships from Chinese Yard
MSC is reportedly expanding its fleet dominance with an unconfirmed order for 20 additional 24,000-TEU megaships from China’s Hengli shipyard. If finalized, the transaction would push the world’s largest container line’s total order book beyond 3.4 million TEU.
This expansion underscores a strategic deepening of the relationship between MSC and Hengli. A confirmed deal would result in a combined pipeline of 62 vessels of 20,000 TEU or larger between the carrier and the shipyard.
The sheer volume of this order, if realized, signals that MSC remains committed to a massive capacity scale-up even as the global container fleet faces significant supply growth. By locking in additional ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), the carrier is effectively positioning itself to further dominate the mainlane trades with the lowest possible slot costs, potentially forcing competitors to accelerate the retirement of older, less efficient tonnage to prevent oversupply.
For the broader market, the continued focus on 24,000-TEU units indicates that major carriers have yet to hit a ceiling on vessel size, suggesting that terminal infrastructure and port efficiency remain the primary constraints on further upsizing rather than a lack of owner appetite.
