Hong Kong Completes First LNG Bunkering for Car Carrier | Mariner News
Hong Kong has significantly advanced its alternative fuel infrastructure, completing its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation for a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).
On September 26, the LNG dual-fuel vessel AICC Fenghuang received 2,600 m3 of LNG in approximately six hours. The operation was conducted at Western Anchorage No. 3, west of Victoria Harbour, by CLPe, a subsidiary of CLP Holdings Limited, and CNOOC (Shenzhen) International Marine Clean Energy.
CNOOC’s LNG bunkering vessel, Haiyang Shiyou 301, supplied the fuel to the 200-meter-long AICC Fenghuang, which is capable of carrying up to 7,000 vehicles across 12 decks. The PCTC subsequently departed for the Mediterranean, carrying vehicles exported from mainland China.
This development expands the joint venture’s LNG bunkering services to include car carriers, following previous operations for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and bulk carriers. Their first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation involving simultaneous cargo handling occurred in June 2025.
Servicing a PCTC for an intercontinental voyage, particularly with Chinese vehicle exports to the Mediterranean, underscores Hong Kong’s strategic intent to position itself as a versatile alternative fuels hub on key East-West trade routes. This diversification across vessel segments – from bulkers and VLCCs to car carriers – indicates a deliberate strategy to meet the evolving demands of a global fleet transitioning to LNG, enhancing the port’s competitive standing in the regional bunkering market.
