JNPA Container Volumes Surge 27 Percent as PSA Mumbai Sets New Record
JNPA handled 8.65 lakh TEUs in October 2026, driven by a record-breaking performance at PSA Mumbai’s BMCTPL terminal.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) recorded a 27.05% year-on-year increase in container traffic for October 2026, handling 8.65 lakh TEUs and signaling a sharp acceleration in throughput at India’s primary container gateway. The port also saw total cargo volumes rise to 10.12 million tonnes, a 19.08% increase compared to the same month in 2025.
The monthly surge significantly outpaces the port’s cumulative performance for the first seven months of the 2026-27 financial year. From April to October 2026, JNPA handled 55.26 lakh TEUs, representing an 18.99% growth rate. The delta between the year-to-date average and the October figures suggests a tightening of the peak season or a structural shift in cargo routing toward the Navi Mumbai hub.
PSA Mumbai Drives Terminal Performance
A primary driver of this growth was Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCTPL), operated by PSA Mumbai. The terminal achieved its highest-ever monthly throughput of 3,12,179 TEUs in October, accounting for approximately 36% of the port’s total container volume. This performance surpassed the terminal’s previous record of 3,03,032 TEUs set only two months prior in August 2026.
The rapid succession of volume records at BMCTPL indicates that the terminal is successfully scaling its operational capacity to meet rising demand. For maritime stakeholders, this suggests that JNPA’s growth is increasingly concentrated in its newest infrastructure, which offers the high-efficiency handling required for larger vessel calls and faster turnaround times.
Infrastructure and Logistics Integration
The sustained volume growth at JNPA is being supported by expanded hinterland connectivity. Recent developments in the region include the launch of a dedicated export train service from ICD Dhirpur to Mundra Port by Gold Star Line, Hind Terminals, and Threeline Logistics, reflecting a broader industry push to stabilize rail-port links amid rising EXIM volumes.
As JNPA continues to reinforce its position as a critical gateway, the reliance on terminal efficiency at facilities like BMCTPL becomes paramount. The current trajectory suggests that the port is on track to significantly exceed its previous annual benchmarks, provided that landside logistics and terminal productivity can maintain pace with the double-digit growth in container arrivals.
