Corvus Blue Whale NxtGen Gets DNV Approval | Mariner News
Corvus Energy’s Blue Whale NxtGen Energy battery system has received type approval from DNV, marking a significant regulatory milestone for advanced energy storage solutions in the maritime sector. This certification confirms the system meets DNV’s rigorous requirements for safety, quality, and performance across both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations.
Designed for large electric and hybrid vessels, including ferries, RoPax, cruise ships, and offshore vessels, the Blue Whale NxtGen Energy system integrates lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry with a rack-free modular architecture. This design supports multi-MWh applications while optimizing onboard space utilization, a critical factor for vessels where footprint and weight directly impact operational capacity and design flexibility.
Thor Humerfelt, Head of Product Innovation at Corvus Energy, highlighted the approval as an “important milestone for Corvus Energy and for the maritime industry’s transition to low- and zero-emission operations.” For shipowners, operators, and shipyards, DNV type approval substantially de-risks the integration of high-capacity battery systems, accelerating confidence in adopting such technologies for new builds and retrofits.
Prior to this formal approval, Corvus Energy had already secured more than 100 MWh in confirmed orders for the Blue Whale NxtGen Energy system. This strong market traction indicates a clear industry demand for certified, scalable, and space-efficient battery solutions as the shipping sector advances its decarbonization efforts.
