RINA, the global certification and engineering firm, and Thailand’s national energy company PTT have formally initiated a collaboration focused on advancing maritime decarbonisation and broader energy transition initiatives across industrial and energy sectors. The two companies signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) through PTT’s Innovation Institute, establishing a framework for research, technical cooperation, and knowledge exchange.
The strategic alliance, rooted in the Asia/Pacific region, signals a concerted effort by a national energy firm to integrate innovative sustainability solutions across its value chain, potentially fostering the development of new energy infrastructure that could benefit maritime stakeholders in Southeast Asia. The agreements specifically target exploring alternative and low-carbon fuels, sustainable aviation fuels, vessel electrification, digitalisation, carbon management, and hydrogen readiness.
A particularly notable area of collaboration is cold energy utilisation, including its potential applications in data centres and small modular reactors. Should PTT successfully integrate such cold energy recovery into its operations, it could enhance the economic and environmental viability of future LNG bunkering facilities or other cryogenics-based energy systems, by creating additional revenue streams or efficiencies from otherwise dissipated energy.
RINA’s contribution to the partnership will leverage both RINA Consulting’s engineering consultancy expertise and RINA Services’ capabilities in certification, verification, assurance, and classification. This dual involvement underscores a comprehensive approach, from conceptual development through to regulatory compliance, for emerging energy solutions.
Saverio Scopelliti, commercial executive vice president at RINA Consulting, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating RINA is “honoured to work with PTT and explore opportunities for technical cooperation in areas that are central to the energy transition.”
