Well-Safe Defender Completes First End-to-End Well Operatorship Campaign

Well-Safe Solutions has concluded a three-well plug and abandonment (P&A) campaign across the West of Shetland and the northern North Sea, marking the first successful execution of the company’s end-to-end well operatorship model.

The 1982-built semi-submersible Well-Safe Defender delivered the scope, which included one subsea well West of Shetland followed by two wells in the Magnus field for EnQuest. The campaign follows the rig’s recent five-yearly special periodic survey (SPS) and subsequent mobilization for its first full-service decommissioning contract.

The Shift to Integrated Operatorship

The completion of this campaign validates a significant shift in the decommissioning sector: the transition from traditional rig-hire agreements to integrated well operatorship. Under this model, Well-Safe Solutions assumed responsibility for project management, subsurface design, and engineering alongside the physical rig operations.

For offshore operators, this turnkey approach transfers a substantial portion of the operational risk and project management burden to the service provider. The success of the Well-Safe Defender suggests that the market is increasingly receptive to single-delivery models that consolidate the supply chain to mitigate the cost and complexity of late-life asset management.

Longevity of Mid-Water Assets

The performance of the Well-Safe Defender, originally built as the WilPhoenix, highlights the continued commercial viability of refurbished mid-water semi-submersibles in the North Sea. Despite its 1982 build date, major upgrades in 2011 and 2016 have positioned the asset as a specialized tool for the decommissioning market rather than the competitive drilling market.

By focusing on P&A-specific modifications, Well-Safe is effectively extending the economic life of older hulls that might otherwise face scrapping. This strategy allows the company to offer a lower-cost alternative to high-specification newbuilds while maintaining the technical capabilities required for complex subsea well abandonments.

The Magnus field operations were part of a multi-year contract with EnQuest, indicating a long-term commitment to this integrated service model. Well-Safe Solutions acquired the rig from Awilco Drilling in June 2022, specifically to bolster its capacity for these high-volume, multi-well decommissioning programs in the UK Continental Shelf.
