Sunoil’s B100-fuelled inland barge, the Birjo II, is reporting positive operational results months after its conversion to run on 100% biodiesel. This pioneering project highlights the viability of renewable fuels in maritime transport, showcasing significant potential for CO2 emission reductions in the sector.
The Netherlands-based energy company Sunoil confirmed that the Dutch inland barge, owned by DK Shipping and operated by BFT Tanker Logistics, has performed well since its conversion in May. The Birjo II plays a crucial role in transporting biodiesel from Sunoil’s Kampen production facility to various storage locations and customers.
Sustainable Fuel Conversion Proves Effective
A key aspect of this initiative is the vessel’s ability to operate entirely on B100 biodiesel without requiring a full engine replacement. Sunoil estimates this strategic shift could significantly cut CO2 emissions by up to 90%, marking a substantial step towards decarbonization in inland shipping operations.
The Birjo II is currently operating successfully on Sunoil’s Dutch-produced B100. The project team is closely monitoring its fuel filtration system to ensure optimal performance and gather comprehensive data on its efficiency.
Johann de Koning, General Manager at BFT Tanker Logistics, expressed satisfaction with the early results. “So far, everything is running quite well,” de Koning stated. “The filter system is being monitored closely and, at this stage, the results are better than we had anticipated.”
Industry Leadership in Renewable Maritime Transport
Jeroen Hovius, CCO at Sunoil, highlighted the practical application of this sustainable solution. “The barge is now successfully running on our own Dutch-produced Sunoil B100 while transporting biodiesel between our locations and customers, putting renewable fuel into practice in day-to-day inland shipping operations,” Hovius commented.
The success of the Birjo II project is viewed as a potential catalyst for broader adoption of B100 biodiesel. Sunoil indicated that these positive findings could support the conversion of additional vessels, further expanding the use of renewable fuels across the inland shipping sector. This initiative positions Sunoil and its partners at the forefront of sustainable maritime logistics.
