
SGMF Completes Methanol Life Cycle Assessment | Mariner News
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) has published its first ISO-compliant life cycle assessment (LCA) for methanol as a marine fuel, completing a crucial analytical set alongside its existing LNG and ammonia LCAs. This comprehensive study confirms that methanol derived from renewable energy sources can deliver substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions across various marine engine types.
Carried out by consultancy WSP, the study is the first full ISO-compliant LCA of methanol for marine applications, adhering to ISO 14040 and 14044. It aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2024 LCA guidelines and underwent critical review by industry experts and academics under ISO 14071. The assessment evaluated 15 methanol production pathways, with emissions calculations covering medium-speed four-stroke and low-speed two-stroke engines.
This rigorous ISO compliance and alignment with forthcoming IMO guidelines significantly bolster the study’s credibility, offering a standardized and expert-vetted benchmark for shipowners, investors, and regulators. It provides a clear, defensible framework for evaluating methanol’s environmental performance and its potential role in maritime decarbonization strategies.
By delineating specific GHG reduction potentials across 15 production pathways, the LCA offers a tangible, quantitative basis for investment decisions in methanol-fueled vessels and associated supply chain infrastructure. This moves beyond general discussions, providing concrete data for assessing various “well-to-wake” emissions profiles.
The completion of SGMF’s LCA trilogy—now encompassing LNG, ammonia, and methanol—enables more direct and standardized comparisons across leading alternative marine fuels. This comprehensive data set empowers stakeholders to better weigh the environmental merits and trade-offs of each fuel option as they navigate complex fleet decarbonization pathways.
