Port of Gävle and VAROPreem Secure 25-Year Terminal Agreement
Gävle Hamn AB and VAROPreem Sverige sign a 25-year deal, securing a strategic hub for Sweden’s industrial energy distribution and future renewables.
Gävle Hamn AB has finalized a 25-year agreement with VAROPreem Sverige, securing the long-term future of a critical energy distribution hub in Sweden. The contract provides a stable framework for the use of port land, facilities, and infrastructure, extending a commercial partnership that dates back to the early 1960s.
The Gävle terminal is a primary node in VAROPreem’s Swedish network, serving the industrial heartlands of Gävle and Dalarna while maintaining the reach to supply the Stockholm region and northern territories. The site’s integration with both maritime and rail infrastructure makes it a vital link in the regional supply chain.
Strategic Pivot to Renewables
While the agreement ensures immediate operational stability for traditional fuel distribution, its 25-year duration is specifically designed to bridge the transition to renewable energy. By locking in land rights and infrastructure access through the mid-2040s, VAROPreem secures the physical footprint necessary to evolve its operations as the energy market shifts away from fossil fuels.
This long-term commitment allows for the significant capital expenditure required to adapt existing terminal infrastructure for next-generation fuels. The port’s strategic location and existing rail connectivity provide the necessary logistics backbone for distributing these new energy products across a wide geographic area.
Fredrik Svanbom, CEO of Gävle Hamn AB, characterized the agreement as a stable foundation for continued port development. Sofia Sundstrñm, VP Terminals at VAROPreem, noted that the terminal’s strategic location will remain central to the company’s strategy as the broader energy system evolves.
