NORDEN has completed the first verified delivery of shipping emissions reductions to Microsoft, utilizing the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) book & claim registry in a pilot project. This landmark initiative positions NORDEN as the first maritime carrier to leverage this system, offering a novel pathway for companies to decarbonize their supply chains.
The book & claim model enables companies to reduce and account for shipping emissions without requiring sustainable fuel to be used on the specific voyage linked to their cargo. Under this system, verified emissions reductions are purchased by companies, while the associated sustainable marine fuel can be physically used elsewhere within the shipping industry.
NORDEN is the first maritime operator to achieve RSB Book & Claim trader certification, allowing it to issue and sell these verified reductions through the registry. Microsoft is the inaugural company to use the RSB registry for shipping emissions, integrating this into its wider efforts to cut supply chain emissions.
This pilot project establishes a significant precedent for scaling sustainable fuel adoption and verifiable emissions accounting in maritime transport. The RSB plans to update its book & claim framework to support wider use in the sector, indicating a potential standardization of such mechanisms. This development creates a new avenue for cargo owners to meet their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets and could influence future chartering decisions and carrier selection based on the availability of robust, verified decarbonization solutions beyond direct vessel operations.
