MSC World Atlantic LNG Cruise Ship Floats Out | Mariner News

Trust Score: 98

MSC Cruises has floated out its new LNG-fuelled vessel, MSC World Atlantic, at Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France. This development reinforces the cruise line’s continued commitment to LNG as a transitional marine fuel, with the ship scheduled to commence Caribbean operations in November 2027.

The float-out occurred on September 26, as announced by the company on Wednesday. The MSC World Atlantic will become the 25th ship in the MSC Cruises fleet and the fourth LNG-fuelled vessel within its World Class series.

MSC’s consistent investment in LNG-powered tonnage underscores its strategy to leverage a fuel option considered more mature and widely available than some alternative marine fuels. While acknowledging the climate benefits are mitigated by methane slip, the expansion of the LNG fleet signals confidence in its immediate operational viability, especially with the potential for using cleaner bio-LNG as a drop-in fuel in existing vessels. This sustained focus on LNG by a major cruise operator implies growing demand for bunkering infrastructure, particularly in key operational regions like the Caribbean.
