MSC to Deploy 16,000 TEU Vessels on Expanded Zephyr Service

MSC is set to transform its Zephyr service from a regional loop into a high-capacity artery by deploying 16,000 TEU vessels and extending its rotation into the Red Sea.

The carrier will add calls at King Abdullah Port and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia while simultaneously removing Salalah from the rotation, according to DynaLiners. The updated port sequence will now link Colombo, Djibouti, King Abdullah Port, Jeddah, and return to Colombo.

Massive Capacity Injection

The most significant operational shift involves a dramatic upscaling of the fleet. MSC is replacing four vessels averaging 4,800 TEUs with seven ships of approximately 16,000 TEUs each. This move more than triples the nominal capacity per hull and nearly doubles the number of vessels on the route.

The transition to 16,000 TEU tonnage indicates that the Zephyr service is moving beyond its current scope to become a primary conduit for Saudi Arabian cargo. By bypassing Salalah in favor of direct calls at Jeddah and King Abdullah Port, MSC is streamlining its Red Sea connectivity and leveraging its largest neo-Panamax assets to handle increased volumes in the region.

The expansion reflects a strategic commitment to Saudi Arabia’s primary maritime gateways. The deployment of seven larger vessels suggests the carrier is preparing for sustained demand or a realignment of transshipment flows through the Red Sea, effectively integrating these hubs more deeply into its global network.
