MOL to Operate Japan’s First LNG Arctic Research Vessel | Mariner News

Japanese shipping company MOL has finalized an agreement with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to operate the LNG dual-fuel Arctic research vessel, Mirai II. The vessel, scheduled for delivery on December 18, 2026, will be Japan’s first research vessel equipped with icebreaking capabilities and is designated as an international platform for Arctic research. Its inaugural Arctic Ocean expedition is planned for summer 2027.

MOL was initially selected as the prospective operator in 2023 and has since been actively preparing its crew and operational framework. This preparation has included specialized polar survival training, conducted in Hokkaido in February 2026. The training encompassed cold-water swimming in immersion suits and drills focused on escaping from the sea onto ice.

The shipping firm stated it will draw upon its experience operating in the Northern Sea Route, its existing LNG expertise, and its newly trained personnel to ensure safe operations of Mirai II. The decision to deploy an LNG dual-fuel vessel for Arctic research underscores a broader trend towards lower-emission maritime operations, even in challenging environments, suggesting an evolving logistical capability for alternative fuels in high latitudes.

For MOL, assuming operational control of a specialized, high-profile vessel like Mirai II enhances its strategic positioning in advanced maritime operations.
