LD Armateurs has launched the Wind of Ocean, the first of two hybrid-electric service operation vessels (SOVs) destined for energy firm Vattenfall. The 90-meter vessel, launched on August 30 at China’s ZPMC shipyard, signals a concrete commitment to more sustainable offshore wind farm support, with delivery expected in 2027 for North Sea operations.

The SOV will support operations at Vattenfall’s DanTysk and Sandbank offshore wind farms. Its propulsion system integrates diesel generators with a substantial battery energy storage system, a configuration designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and onboard noise levels during demanding offshore assignments.

This hybrid design signifies a critical industry shift towards decarbonizing the offshore support fleet. The incorporation of a larger battery system, combined with four azimuth thrusters and a double-ended design, suggests an emphasis not only on environmental performance but also on superior operational flexibility, precise station-keeping capabilities, and enhanced crew comfort in challenging environments.

Accommodating up to 96 people, the Wind of Ocean will be fitted with a motion-compensated gangway, vital for safe and efficient transfers of technicians and equipment to offshore turbines. This focus on operational continuity and safety underscores the vessel’s role in maximizing wind farm uptime and efficiency. Its construction in China for deployment in European waters also highlights the globalized nature of the specialized vessel newbuilding market.
