European efforts to advance direct current (DC) ship power systems towards commercial deployment are gaining significant momentum through two collaborative EU-funded initiatives. The Horizon Europe projects, STEESMAT and ALL-DC-SHIPS, are joining forces to drive the adoption of these innovative power solutions in the maritime sector.

This collaborative push is focused on enhancing energy efficiency onboard vessels and facilitating the seamless integration of crucial low-emission technologies, such as batteries and fuel cells. The STEESMAT consortium coordinator, Maritime CleanTech, highlighted in an emailed update that these projects are also exploring how DC power architectures can support the broader integration of various sustainable energy sources across shipping.

Advancing Maritime Electrification

The ALL-DC-SHIPS project is dedicated to developing a fully integrated DC electrical architecture. This cutting-edge system is slated for rigorous testing on a 3,000 GT dredger, providing real-world operational insights into its performance and reliability.

Simultaneously, the STEESMAT project is focusing on medium-voltage DC systems. Its work incorporates solid-state transformers, a low-voltage DC grid, and advanced AI-based energy management capabilities. This comprehensive system will first undergo land-based testing before being demonstrated aboard a commercial vessel, validating its efficacy in a live maritime environment.

Standardization and Market Readiness

Beyond technological development, both projects are emphasizing critical areas of testing, validation, and the establishment of industry standards. These steps are essential for the wider adoption and market acceptance of DC ship power systems. The move towards standardized solutions will help build confidence and streamline future implementations across the global fleet.

To foster industry dialogue and address key challenges, STEESMAT and ALL-DC-SHIPS will jointly host a workshop at SMM Hamburg on September 3. This event will serve as a crucial platform for discussing the technical, regulatory, and commercial pathways necessary to make DC ship power systems market-ready. The workshop aims to bring together stakeholders to align on the steps needed for broad commercialization.

This concerted European drive underscores a significant commitment to decarbonizing shipping and improving the energy footprint of maritime operations through advanced electrical systems.
