Covestro, Fertiglobe Explore Ammonia Supply Chain Hamburg | Mariner News
Covestro, Fertiglobe, and MB Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore establishing an ammonia supply chain into Germany, centered on a proposed import terminal in Hamburg. This tripartite collaboration signals a notable step towards securing future industrial feedstock and green hydrogen pathways for Germany.
The agreement, formalized during a state visit to Germany by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, focuses on an import terminal MB Energy intends to build and operate at Blumensand in Hamburg. Fertiglobe, described as the world’s largest seaborne exporter of urea and ammonia combined, will evaluate supplying ammonia through this facility.
A key aspect of the MoU is Fertiglobe’s exploration of a potential equity stake in the proposed Blumensand terminal. This signifies a deeper commitment by a major producer beyond traditional supply agreements, suggesting a strategic move towards direct investment in crucial import infrastructure to secure and streamline future energy corridors.
Covestro, a significant industrial end-user, will assess the offtake of ammonia from the terminal for two strategic purposes: as a chemical feedstock and as a source for hydrogen supply. This dual application highlights ammonia’s growing importance not only in industrial processes but also as a carrier for decarbonized energy.
The potential vertical integration by Fertiglobe into Hamburg’s import infrastructure could de-risk future supply chains for industrial consumers like Covestro, fostering dedicated trade routes for new energy fuels. This model could prove influential in establishing other major green fuel import hubs, solidifying Hamburg’s position as a gateway for Germany’s energy transition.
