Bureau Veritas has completed a design assessment of Bound4blue’s Model 3-24 eSAIL suction sail, providing independent recognition that de-risks the wind propulsion technology for broader adoption, particularly across larger vessel segments.
The assessment, announced Tuesday during a handover ceremony at SMM 2026 in Hamburg, signals a growing maturity and commercial viability for suction sail systems within the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
The Model 3-24, designed for larger vessels with sail heights from 24 to 36 meters, was commercially installed earlier this year on Klaveness Combination Carriers’ Baltazar. This follows Bound4blue’s reported market traction, with 13 operational vessels equipped with eSAIL systems, six additional installations in its orderbook, and more than 50 units ordered.
Bound4blue states its suction sails can generate up to seven times the propulsive force of rigid sails of the same size, delivering double-digit fuel savings. The system’s operational flexibility allows installation on both newbuilds and existing vessels, functioning alongside conventional propulsion systems.
Critically, the eSAIL technology is positioned to complement future-fuel strategies utilizing methanol and ammonia, integrating wind assistance into comprehensive long-term decarbonization pathways.
