Brittany Ferries Achieves 6% Fuel Savings with Digital Twin | Mariner News

Brittany Ferries has achieved fuel savings of up to 6% across nine vessels in its fleet by implementing a digital twin-enabled routing solution. This advancement, developed in partnership with Adrena and Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore, has been validated through thousands of commercial voyages and nearly two years of onboard monitoring aboard the E-Flexer class vessel Galicia.

The system integrates vessel performance data, operational information, and route optimisation to enhance voyage planning and machinery operation. This solution is now active across the fleet operating routes between France, the UK, Guernsey, Ireland, and Spain.

A key implication for the ferry operator is the confirmed ability to maintain service integrity and passenger satisfaction alongside these efficiency gains. Brice Robinson, Head of Studies and Projects at Brittany Ferries, highlighted that the results demonstrate it is possible “to reduce our vessels’ energy consumption while preserving the reliability of our operations and the experience we offer our customers.”

This current solution evolves from an earlier AdrenaShip system launched with Adrena in 2016, which initially provided approximately 4% fuel savings. Bureau Veritas Solutions joined the partnership in 2022 specifically to develop vessel-specific digital twins, building upon the initial optimisation efforts. The fleet-wide deployment underscores the technology’s proven effectiveness and scalability for high-frequency scheduled operations.
