August Sees Surge in Alternative-Fuelled Vessel Orders | Mariner News
August marked the strongest monthly ordering activity for alternative-fuelled vessels since October 2024, with 52 newbuilds added to the orderbook, according to classification society DNV’s AFI platform data. This surge signals a notable acceleration in decarbonization investment after a slower start to 2026, pushing year-to-date orders for alternative-capable vessels to 242, a 27% increase year-on-year.
LNG-fuelled vessels dominated the August orders, accounting for 46 new additions. Container ships led this activity with 30 orders, alongside 12 LNG-fuelled car carriers, as noted by Kristian Hammer, DNV’s product manager for AFI and senior consultant.
The concentration of LNG orders within the container and car carrier sectors reinforces LNG’s position as a primary transitional fuel for specific liner trades. This suggests operators in these segments are strategically committing to established dual-fuel technology to meet immediate emission reduction targets, potentially influencing competitive dynamics and the ongoing development of port-based LNG bunkering infrastructure.
Beyond LNG, the month also saw diversification in fuel pathways. Four ethanol-fuelled and two hydrogen-fuelled bulk carriers were ordered. While smaller in number, these additions highlight a nascent but crucial exploration of different zero-emission solutions, particularly within the dry bulk sector. This indicates that segments with varying operational profiles are pursuing tailored decarbonization strategies, implying a future multi-fuel fleet requiring flexible bunkering and engine technologies.
Additionally, one LNG bunkering vessel was ordered, underscoring continued investment in the critical infrastructure required to support the expanding fleet of LNG-fuelled tonnage. This sustained ordering trend, particularly following a period of slower activity, could place increasing pressure on shipyard capacity and the supply chains for specialized engines and fuel systems in the coming years.
