The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) has completed the construction and delivery of two self-propelled bunker vessels to Bapco Refining, a subsidiary of Bapco Energies. The handover follows the successful conclusion of sea trials, commissioning, and performance testing for both units.

Project Capabilities

The project marks a notable departure for the Bahrain-based shipyard, which has historically focused on ship repair and maintenance. By managing the full lifecycle of these bunker vessels—from initial design and engineering to outfitting and final delivery—ASRY is signaling a strategic pivot toward domestic integrated shipbuilding. This capability allows Bapco Refining to shorten its supply chain for harbor and bunkering assets, reducing reliance on third-party regional or international shipyards for smaller, specialized tonnage.

Operational Implications

For Bapco Refining, the integration of these self-propelled bunker vessels into their fleet enhances operational flexibility within local waters. Unlike non-propelled barges that require continuous tug assistance for port operations, these vessels offer greater maneuverability during bunkering maneuvers. This efficiency gain likely points to an effort by the refinery to optimize bunkering turnaround times at their terminals.

The delivery also validates ASRY’s capacity to handle full-scale newbuild projects, providing the company with a track record that could be leveraged to compete for similar niche vessel contracts in the Arabian Gulf. The vessels have officially transitioned to full operational readiness following the signing of the Protocol of Delivery by ASRY CEO Dr. Ahmed Al Abri and Bapco Refining EVP Sayed Mahmood Al Matooq.
