ARC Freedom Joins U.S.-Flag Fleet, Boosts Maritime Security | Mariner News

The American Roll-On/Roll-Off Carrier Group (ARC Group) has added a significant new vehicle carrier, the ARC Freedom, to its U.S.-flagged fleet, enhancing national security and bolstering the Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Maritime Security Program (MSP).

The 231-meter, 31,143 dwt vessel, built in 2011 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, was previously named Figaro and operated under the Swedish flag for Wallenius Marine. Its ownership transferred to ARC Group in June before joining the American registry.

With a capacity for nearly 8,000 units across 13 vehicle decks, including five hoistable decks, the ARC Freedom significantly expands ARC Group’s capabilities. This flexible deck configuration is particularly notable, allowing for the transport of diverse cargo sizes and configurations, including helicopters, catering to varied commercial and government logistics needs.

ARC, a subsidiary of Norway’s Wallenius Wilhelmsen Group, now operates a fleet of 10 vessels supporting the U.S. Government. MARAD Administrator Captain Stephen M. Carmel emphasized the strategic importance, stating the addition of ARC Freedom is a “major win for America’s national security.” The vessel’s entry into the MSP ensures critical sealift capacity is available for defense and other strategic requirements.

President and CEO of ARC Group, Eric Ebeling, remarked on the fitting name ARC Freedom as the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary, linking the vessel to a broader national context.
