Antwerp-Bruges Begins Green Hydrogen Production | Mariner News
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has initiated commercial production of green hydrogen through Power to Hydrogen at its NextGen District, effective Friday, September 25, 2026. This development marks a foundational step in establishing local green energy infrastructure within a major European maritime hub.
The facility is capable of producing up to 70 metric tons of green hydrogen annually. It employs a 250 kW electrolyser, utilizing renewable electricity and hybrid AEM-alkaline technology to achieve an output of 5 kg per hour. While the initial scale of production is modest for direct marine bunkering applications, the project is explicitly designed as a precursor for future multi-megawatt systems.
This pilot facility’s primary aim is to supply the region’s fuel, chemical, and mobility sectors, thereby fostering a local demand and supply ecosystem for green hydrogen. For the maritime sector, the operational validation of this production method at a port is significant. It underscores Antwerp-Bruges’ strategic commitment to positioning itself as a frontrunner in the energy transition and a future supplier of decarbonized marine fuels or their derivatives.
The initiative highlights the critical role of public-private partnerships in scaling new energy technologies. The project benefits from support provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF/EFRO) and VLAIO, demonstrating a collaborative approach to de-risk and advance innovative clean energy solutions. This collaborative model is essential for developing the robust supply chains required for large-scale maritime decarbonization.
