ABS, HD KSOE, Siemens Advance Ammonia Vessel Safety | Mariner News
ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and Siemens have initiated a collaborative project to advance the safety assessment of ammonia-fuelled vessels using digital twin technology. Announced at Gastech 2026, the partnership aims to integrate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to predict ammonia dispersion during leak scenarios, directly supporting the design phase of newbuilds.
This initiative is set to significantly accelerate safety validation for the emerging class of ammonia-fuelled ships. By enabling comprehensive assessment of leakage and accident scenarios in the early stages of vessel design, the technology allows for proactive safety optimization, potentially reducing future design modifications and associated costs.
Under the memorandum of understanding, HD KSOE will focus on developing ammonia safety systems and conducting experimental research, bolstering its leadership in constructing alternative-fuel vessels. Siemens will provide its simulation and digital twin expertise, while ABS is tasked with developing the overarching safety assessment methodology. This collaborative approach not only leverages specialized expertise but also lays groundwork for harmonized safety standards, a critical component for widespread adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel.
