Yasa Shipping has reportedly acquired two Newcastlemax bulk carriers from Rio Tinto Shipping, signifying a strategic fleet expansion for the Turkish owner and a potential shift in asset strategy for the global mining major.

The vessels, both 204,950 dwt, were previously named RTM Drake and RTM Tasman. They have since been renamed Yasa Drake and Yasa Pioneer, indicating their integration into Yasa Shipping’s operational fleet.

This transaction sees Rio Tinto Shipping divesting vessels that previously operated under its direct control. Such a move could suggest an increasing emphasis on an asset-light model for the mining company’s extensive raw material transport requirements, potentially optimizing capital deployment through greater reliance on long-term charters rather than direct vessel ownership.

For Yasa Shipping, the acquisition of these large dry bulk vessels bolsters its presence in the Newcastlemax segment, specifically designed for the efficient transport of high-volume commodities such as iron ore and coal.
