Wah Kwong NatPower has formalized a partnership with Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to spearhead marine electrification efforts in Hong Kong’s Aberdeen and Shum Wan districts. The agreement, announced on Tuesday, aims to explore comprehensive solutions for green shipping infrastructure and operations in a key local maritime hub.

The collaboration will assess the feasibility and implementation of shore power facilities, advanced vessel charging infrastructure, and integrated battery energy storage systems. A significant focus will be on the introduction and deployment of electric vessels specifically designed for local transport and tourism services.

This initiative marks a targeted advancement within Hong Kong’s broader agenda for green shipping and smart port development. By concentrating on Aberdeen and Shum Wan, areas known for their vibrant local vessel activity, the partnership signals a strategic move to electrify a specific segment of the domestic fleet, potentially serving as a scalable model for similar in-harbour and near-shore operations across the region.

The initial phase of the project includes plans for constructing a series of electric transport vessels, alongside the potential deployment of the ApliAber electric vessel fleet. This indicates a move beyond pilot projects towards systematic fleet transformation and the establishment of dedicated electric vessel operations.

Wah Kwong NatPower, which is actively developing maritime electrification infrastructure across Asia—encompassing clean power for ships at berth and propulsion—positions this Hong Kong endeavour as a vital step in its regional strategy. Vincent Ni, General Manager of WK NatPower, affirmed, “This MoU marks an important step in supporting Hong Kong’s marine energy transition.”
