Viking Energy Ammonia Bunkering Trial Approved in Norway | Mariner News
The ammonia-fuelled platform supply vessel (PSV) Viking Energy has received regulatory approval for its first bunkering trial in Norway, advancing the demonstration of ammonia as a viable marine fuel and validating critical supply logistics.
Azane Fuel Solutions secured approval from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection to conduct a test bunkering of up to 73 metric tonnes of ammonia. The operation is planned for October or November in Stord, Norway.
This trial is crucial for testing the full bunkering arrangements and safety systems installed on the vessel, involving the transfer of ammonia from up to three trucks. The truck-to-ship method, particularly for a significant volume of ammonia, offers a practical validation of the operational procedures and safety protocols essential for establishing future bunkering networks for this highly toxic fuel.
The Viking Energy, owned by Eidesvik Offshore, is undergoing conversion under the Apollo project, having transitioned from LNG to ammonia propulsion. This conversion pathway highlights a potential strategy for repurposing existing alternative-fuel vessels to adopt more ambitious zero-emission fuels.
The bunkering trial precedes a broader commercial initiative, as Azane Fuel Solutions has also agreed to supply ammonia and provide truck-to-ship bunkering services to Norwegian energy company Equinor, with initial deliveries slated for late 2026.
