Trafigura Unveils Volare Shipping, Expanding VLCC Fleet | Mariner News

Trust Score: 95

Commodity trading giant Trafigura has launched Volare Shipping, a dedicated company established to own and operate a fleet of oil tankers. The new firm currently operates six VLCCs, with an additional eight vessels on order for delivery between 2026 and 2028, signaling a significant strategic expansion into direct vessel ownership.

Volare Shipping plans to raise approximately $500 million through a private placement before seeking a listing on Euronext Growth Oslo. Trafigura will retain majority shareholder status, with its existing shipping business set to commercially manage the fleet. Trading on Euronext is expected to commence around October 5, subject to regulatory approval and completion of the placement.

Upon delivery of all newbuilds, Volare Shipping’s fleet will comprise 14 VLCCs, boasting an average age of about three years. These vessels are described as larger than standard tankers, equipped with additional tank coating and heating systems, features that suggest an intent to transport specialized crude grades or refined products requiring specific handling and temperature control.

Critically, the newbuilds are specified as ammonia-ready and incorporate dual-fuel capability. This forward-looking design positions the fleet to address future decarbonization mandates and volatile fuel markets, offering enhanced operational flexibility and potentially securing preferred charter agreements in an evolving regulatory landscape. The investment in such technologically advanced vessels indicates a long-term commitment to asset value and environmental performance within Trafigura’s expanded logistics chain.
