Stena Line has ordered two hybrid ferries, slated for delivery in 2030, to operate on its Gothenburg – Frederikshavn route. These vessels will initially run on a combination of conventional marine fuel and electricity, with significant future-proofing built in for eventual conversion to 100% electric operation.

The strategic move positions Stena Line to meet anticipated stricter environmental regulations and advance its CO2 reduction targets. Each ferry is designed to accommodate up to 1,500 passengers and 2,750 lane metres of freight, with construction assigned to China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard in China.

While the vessels are prepared for full electric transition, the actual conversion hinges on the availability of necessary charging infrastructure. This dependency underscores a broader industry challenge, where advanced vessel designs are increasingly outpacing shoreside power capabilities, implying that such orders act as a catalyst for port and grid development.

According to Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line, the new ferries will “strengthen our customer offering by taking the travel experience to a new level.” He further noted that the investment “future-proofs our own CO₂ reduction targets while preparing for the stricter environmental requirements ahead,” signaling a long-term commitment to decarbonization that extends beyond immediate operational needs. The 2030 delivery timeline indicates a deep integration of these advanced vessels into Stena Line’s mid-term strategic fleet planning.
