The Port of Los Angeles has reported its most active three-month period in history, processing over 2.9 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) across its docks from June through August. This surge was capped by a strong August performance of 955,907 TEUs, which stands 6% above the port’s five-year average for the month and on par with last year’s figures.

Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka attributed the exceptional summer to resilient consumer demand, an influx of early holiday shipments, and a diverse cargo mix. He anticipates the momentum will continue, with September also projected to be a strong month, positioning Los Angeles effectively as global trade patterns evolve.

While trans-Pacific freight rates to the West Coast currently favor East Coast routings, Seroka highlighted a key competitive differentiator for the Port of Los Angeles. The port’s ability to rapidly move cargo through its facilities and onto rail networks creates attractive overall economics for importers distributing goods across the United States. This emphasis on landside speed and intermodal efficiency helps the port maintain its draw despite potentially less favorable ocean freight rates.
