ONE Takes Delivery of Ammonia- and Methanol-Ready ONE SYMPHONY
Ocean Network Express has named the 14,000 TEU ONE SYMPHONY, the latest in a series of 20 dual-fuel ready newbuilds entering the fleet.
Ocean Network Express (ONE) has officially named its latest newbuild, the 14,000 TEU ONE SYMPHONY, during a ceremony held in Japan on 22 October. The vessel represents a critical component of the carrier’s fleet renewal strategy, serving as one of 20 newbuilds designed to be ammonia- and methanol-ready.
The delivery highlights a strategic shift in how major container lines are managing the transition to alternative fuels. By specifying these vessels as ready for both ammonia and methanol, ONE is effectively hedging against the current uncertainty surrounding future bunker supply chains. This dual-readiness allows the operator to defer the high capital expenditure of full conversion until a clear winner emerges between the two fuel pathways, while ensuring the asset remains compliant with tightening decarbonization regulations.
The vessel’s construction, overseen by partners including Imabari Shipbuilding and Nihon Shipyard, underscores the collaborative approach required to integrate complex dual-fuel systems into the standard container ship design. For charterers and cargo owners, the deployment of the ONE SYMPHONY signals a move toward higher-spec tonnage that can accommodate future environmental mandates without requiring premature retirement or extensive mid-life retrofits.
As ONE continues to integrate these 20 vessels into its network, the operational flexibility of the fleet will likely increase. The ability to switch between fuel types—or to adopt whichever becomes more commercially viable at major bunkering hubs—provides a significant competitive advantage in an era of volatile fuel pricing and evolving emissions reporting requirements.
