All 25 crew members of the Liberia-registered container ship MSC Hermes III have been successfully rescued after the vessel issued a distress alert approximately 300 km east of Vietnam today. The incident, coordinated by Singapore’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Singapore), highlights the swift and effective response mechanisms within the region’s maritime search and rescue network.
MRCC Singapore received the alert at approximately 8:45 AM Singapore time, identifying the MSC Hermes III within Singapore’s Maritime Search and Rescue Region. A broadcast was immediately issued to solicit assistance from nearby vessels.
Three vessels responded to the call, with the MSC Ruby ultimately recovering all 25 crew members after they abandoned the MSC Hermes III in a lifeboat. All crew are reported safe with no injuries.
The abandonment of the vessel suggests a severe incident affecting the MSC Hermes III’s operational integrity, prompting a significant operational disruption for operator MSC.
