Moeve Begins Construction of Green Hydrogen Plant in Spain | Mariner News
Moeve has commenced construction of a 300 MW green hydrogen plant in Spain, a significant €1 billion investment aimed at producing renewable hydrogen for lower-carbon fuels, critically including those for maritime transport. This project marks a tangible step in scaling alternative fuel production for shipping’s decarbonization pathway.
Located in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, the Onuba project is expected to yield approximately 45,000 metric tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, projected to mitigate about 250,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The plant has garnered substantial public sector backing, being designated a Project of Common Interest by the European Union and securing €304 million in Spanish government funding under the NextGenerationEU recovery plan. This underscores the strategic importance of green hydrogen infrastructure for regional and EU energy transition goals.
This initiative is a core component of the broader Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, which aims to establish 2 GW of electrolysis capacity across Huelva and San Roque, Cádiz. The development suggests the emergence of a substantial green fuel production and bunkering hub in Southern Spain, potentially influencing vessel routing and supply chain logistics in the region.
Moeve holds a 51% stake in the project, with Hy24 and Spain’s public-private finance institution COFIDES holding a combined 29%. Enagás Renovable and Alter Enersun own the remaining 20%. The hydrogen production is slated to support not only maritime transport but also road, aviation, and other industrial sectors, diversifying demand and bolstering project viability.
