METRANS Poznań Terminal Expansion Boosts Capacity | Mariner News
METRANS, a subsidiary of HHLA, has completed a significant expansion of its intermodal terminal in Poznań/Gądki, Poland, substantially increasing both storage and annual handling capacities to bolster rail connectivity across Central Europe.
The upgrade included the addition of two new remote-controlled railway gantry cranes, extended and new tracks, alongside expanded storage and service areas. Maximum storage capacity has increased from 8,850 TEU to 11,800 TEU, while annual handling capacity has seen an almost 80 per cent surge to approximately 590,000 TEU.
Located near Poland’s fifth-largest city, Gądki functions as a critical hub within METRANS’ intermodal network, linking the rapidly growing Polish market – an EU sixth-largest economy with 3.6 per cent real GDP growth in 2025 – to major economic centers across the continent.
Peter Kiss, CEO of the METRANS Group, highlighted that Gądki exemplifies how modern inland terminals, combined with a robust rail network, can enhance the connection between seaports and Central European customers. This investment not only boosts volume but also strengthens the operational spine of METRANS’ network, offering a more efficient and scalable alternative for cargo flow between deep-sea ports and the European hinterland.
The near 80% increase in annual handling capacity, coupled with the introduction of remote-controlled gantry cranes and new tracks, signals a strategic shift towards higher throughput efficiency and automation. This positions the Poznań terminal as a pivotal, tech-enabled gateway for intermodal movements in the region, likely attracting expanded rail services and reducing reliance on traditional road transport for critical mid-mile logistics in Central European supply chains.
