Macquarie Invests Over $2 Billion in Greek Shipping | Mariner News
Macquarie has cemented its position as a major financial force in the Greek shipping market, having deployed over $2 billion in capital since 2017. This extensive investment highlights the firm’s strategic and sustained commitment to a crucial global maritime hub.
Led by Marc Hari, head of shipping finance, Macquarie’s activities encompass more than 75 transactions, with its current portfolio exceeding $1 billion. A significant portion of this engagement has been with Atlas Maritime, which has completed over 25 deals with Macquarie since their first transaction in 2017.
The breadth of Macquarie’s involvement extends across various segments. Recently, the firm provided a $99 million senior debt facility to companies within the Technomar Group for the refinancing of seven containerships. It has also supported Adele Shipmanagement in financing its inaugural bulk carriers and currently finances four vessels owned by the group.
This continuous deployment of capital and repeated engagement with specific clients, such as Atlas Maritime, suggests Macquarie is cultivating deeper, long-term relationships rather than executing one-off transactions. For its Greek shipping partners, this establishes Macquarie as a consistent and active alternative financing source, potentially influencing their fleet development and expansion strategies outside of traditional banking avenues. The ongoing nature of the portfolio, with current holdings substantial after more than double that amount has been deployed, indicates active capital recycling and a dynamic, evolving presence in the market.
