Equinor Joins GCMD to Advance Alternative Marine Fuels | Mariner News

Norwegian energy company Equinor has formally joined the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) as an Impact Partner under a five-year agreement, aiming to accelerate the development and scaling of alternative marine fuels. The partnership brings together GCMD’s expertise in maritime pilot projects with Equinor’s multifaceted experience as a vessel charterer, energy provider, and developer of low-carbon solutions, GCMD announced on Tuesday.

The collaboration will specifically target practical challenges encountered with biofuels, ammonia, and methanol. Key areas of focus include operational safety, robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) protocols, alongside critical issues concerning fuel quantity, quality, and accurate greenhouse gas emissions accounting.

Equinor’s direct involvement as a charterer of dual-fuel LNG, LPG, and methanol tankers, coupled with its experience testing and using biofuels and piloting ammonia as a marine fuel, offers a unique operational perspective. This broad industry engagement suggests the partnership will generate insights directly applicable to de-risking new fuel adoption for both suppliers and end-users, potentially influencing future vessel specifications and chartering terms.

Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD, stated the initiative is designed to “generate the operational evidence needed to close these gaps and build confidence in solutions that can deliver meaningful emissions reductions.” This underscores a strategic shift towards evidence-based deployment and standardization necessary for widespread market acceptance and regulatory alignment of these alternative fuels.
