Eastern Shipbuilding to Build Structural Units for USS Philadelphia
Eastern Shipbuilding Group will build six structural units for the future USS Philadelphia (LPD 32) as part of a distributed shipbuilding strategy.
Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) has been selected by HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division to manufacture six key structural modular units for the future USS Philadelphia (LPD 32), a San Antonio-class Amphibious Transport Dock.
The contract leverages ESG’s Gulf Coast facilities to support Ingalls’ distributed shipbuilding strategy. Production is currently underway, with final deliveries to the Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, scheduled for the third and fourth quarters of 2027. Once delivered, the ESG-fabricated modules will be integrated into the final assembly of the vessel.
Distributed Shipbuilding Strategy
The agreement represents a significant operational shift toward decentralized manufacturing in naval construction. By outsourcing selected modular units to trusted partners like ESG, Ingalls is effectively increasing its manufacturing throughput and establishing parallel construction lines. This approach allows the primary shipyard to mitigate physical capacity constraints and meet rising fleet demand without the immediate need for capital-intensive footprint expansions.
For the maritime industry, this development signals a growing reliance on Tier 2 shipyards to maintain the U.S. Navy’s delivery schedules. While the strategy offers a solution to bottlenecking at major yards, it places a premium on logistical synchronization and strict adherence to quality standards across multiple sites to ensure seamless integration during the final assembly phase.
The future USS Philadelphia is the latest hull in the San Antonio-class program to utilize this distributed model. The timeline for ESG’s contributions ensures that critical structural components will be ready for the final integration phase in Pascagoula by late 2027.
