DP World Names Methanol Dual-Fuel Feeder Vessel | Mariner News
DP World has officially named its new 1,250 TEU methanol dual-fuel feeder container ship, the DP World London, in Aarhus, Denmark. This development marks a tangible step in integrating alternative fuel vessels into critical intra-European logistics, reinforcing commitments to lower-emission shipping solutions.
The naming ceremony follows the vessel’s initial methanol bunkering operation, which occurred on June 25 in Rotterdam. Unibarge served as the bunkering partner, with Methanex supplying the alternative fuel, highlighting the growing operational readiness and supply chain maturity for methanol in key European ports.
Owned by Germany’s Elbdeich Reederei and operated by DP World Shipping Solutions, the Portugal-flagged DP World London will be deployed on the North Europe service. Built in China and delivered in April 2026, the 148-meter vessel is equipped with a five-cylinder main engine and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology, signaling comprehensive integration of emissions-reducing features.
Martin Gaard Christiansen, CEO, Shipping Solutions EAM at DP World, emphasized the vessel’s dual significance, stating it “reflects both our heritage and the future we are building.” Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer, Marine Services at DP World, added that the vessel is a “tangible example of how DP World is investing in practical innovation to provide customers with more reliable, flexible and lower-emission shipping solutions.”
The deployment of a methanol dual-fuel feeder vessel of this capacity on an active North European service, coupled with its proven bunkering capability, underscores an advancing ecosystem for alternative marine fuels. This not only signals increasing market confidence in methanol as a viable marine fuel but also suggests a competitive edge for operators offering demonstrably greener solutions in regional trade lanes. The established bunkering infrastructure and supply partnerships further derisk future investments in similar tonnage.
