DNV Secures Accredia Accreditation for EU CBAM Verification

DNV has received official accreditation from Accredia to perform verification services for the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The authorization allows the classification society to verify the greenhouse gas emissions data that importers of carbon-intensive goods must now report to EU authorities.

The accreditation by Italy’s national accreditation body, Accredia, positions DNV as a key intermediary in the EU’s effort to prevent carbon leakage. While the maritime industry is already navigating the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), CBAM shifts the focus to the carbon footprint of the cargo itself, specifically targeting sectors such as steel, aluminum, cement, and fertilizers.

Streamlining Industrial Compliance

For maritime stakeholders, particularly those involved in the industrial bulk and breakbulk trades, this development simplifies a complex regulatory landscape. By utilizing an accredited verifier already deeply embedded in maritime operations, industrial shippers and importers can better align their cargo-level emissions reporting with the vessel-level data required under existing maritime regulations.

The move comes as the CBAM transitional phase continues, requiring accurate data on embedded emissions before the definitive system takes full effect. DNV’s entry as an accredited verifier provides the necessary third-party oversight to ensure that the data submitted by importers meets the rigorous standards demanded by EU regulators.
